R10: Poster analysis

Me and my partner have decided to analyse a few horror movie posters within our sub genre of mystery. We analysed modern horror movie posters as well horror movie posters from the past.

There was a clear difference between horror movie posters of the past and the present. This difference was based on the color schemes used in the horror movie posters, for example horror movie posters of the past used unusual colors and colors that may be considered unconventional of horror movie posters, such as the use of yellow (Psycho 1960) and green (The corpse has vanished 1942). Whereas, modern horror movie posters have stuck to the use of conventional dark colors, such as black (which is evident in both Orphan 2009 and Texas Chainsaw 2013).

However, what we found was similar between both the modern and past posters was the use of text, for example in all 4 posters, the typography of the movie titles assisted the overall theme that the horror movie posters hold. In particular, this is true in the Orphan (2009) horror movie posters, whereby the movie title seems to be scratched on, just like a child has scribbled on the poster. This connotes and gives a creepy but childish feel to the poster. As a result, providing that conventional horror factor to the poster.

From the poster analysis I would like to take away the idea of just inputting only one character in to our horror movie poster, as I feel this is conventional of modern horror movie posters and provides that factor to stimulate curiosity. However, I also want our horror movie poster to have unconventional elements, thus perhaps may consider to use unconventional colors in our horror movie poster, like the past horror movie posters.
